Bruxism is a jaw disorder in which you clench or grind your teeth. It often occurs during sleep, and can cause significant damage to your teeth over time. While bruxism affects people of all ages, it’s most common in adults between the ages of 25 and 44 and affects nearly 30% of the population to some degree.
The main symptoms include grinding your teeth, clenching your jaw, clenching of facial muscles and a feeling of tightness in the jaw. If left untreated, bruxism can lead to headaches, jaw pain, sore gums, toothaches and worn-down enamel.
Fortunately, there are many non-invasive treatments available to help manage bruxism. Stress-reduction techniques, such as relaxation exercises and guided imagery, can be beneficial for some people. Additionally, medications that reduce muscle spasms can help with the clenching of the jaw muscles associated with bruxism.
For severe cases of bruxism, a dental fitted oral appliance may be recommended. In our practice, we use the advanced 3DS Protect. This is a custom-made mouthguard designed to fit snugly over your teeth, preventing them from grinding and providing protection against damage. Wearing an oral appliance during sleep can also help reduce headaches, jaw pain and toothaches associated with grinding.
